This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of a modified approach in improving volleyball playing skills among tenth-grade students at MAS Bustanul Ulum GUPPI, Tebing Tinggi City, during the 2025/2026 academic year. The study employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles. The participants were tenth-grade students of MAS Bustanul Ulum GUPPI. The modified approach was implemented by adjusting the court dimensions, net height, game rules, and learning facilities according to the students’ abilities and characteristics. Data were collected through observation, volleyball skill tests, and documentation, and were analyzed using descriptive quantitative and qualitative techniques. The findings revealed improvements in students’ basic volleyball skills following the implementation of the modified approach. The percentage of students demonstrating proficiency in the underhand pass increased from 55% to 78%, the overhead pass from 48% to 72%, and the underhand serve from 52% to 75%. Students’ movement coordination also improved from 50% to 76%. In addition to improving technical skills, the modified approach increased students’ learning activity, motivation, enthusiasm, and confidence during the learning process. It also helped teachers address limitations in learning facilities and accommodate differences in students’ abilities. By providing a more adaptive, enjoyable, and participatory learning environment, the modified approach provided students with greater opportunities to practice and develop their basic volleyball skills. Therefore, the modified approach can be considered an effective alternative strategy for Physical Education, Sports, and Health (PJOK) instruction to improve students’ volleyball skills and engagement in the learning process.
